Toby and I sit down in the main lobby near the animatronic dinosaur, Bella, to check our museum map. We aren’t sure how to move through the museum in a logical manner to capture video for our audience and share the natural history of New Mexico.
“Can I help you?”
Tom, a volunteer docent at the museum, is wearing a blue vest, a nametag, and a facemask.
We’re happy and relieved to get the answers we need.
“This museum is about the history of New Mexico through time, is that correct?” Toby asks.
“Yes, we focus on New Mexico, but it is more than that. It starts with the creation of the earth and moves forward in time through billions of years. There are eight time periods and they go in order.
You start up there at number one.” Tom points upstairs to a banner showing the number 1.
We look down at the map and he points to the corresponding numbers.
Understanding clicks for us.
Now we can make a plan.
As a content entrepreneur, it can be tempting to try and figure everything out on your own. After all, you are a self-starter and you’re used to relying on your own skills and knowledge to get things done.
However, there comes a time when turning to an expert for help is a better option than trying to go it alone.
While it’s possible to learn almost anything on your own through research, trial and error, and experimentation, seeking help from an expert can help you save time and resources.

While Toby and I walk around the Natural History Museum wearing our NM Day Trips vests and hats, a few people come up to us and ask for directions. They think we work here.
They have a false impression that we work here because they don’t look closely enough to see that we are just like them, a little lost.
I suppose we do a better job of looking confident because we know we’ll figure it out together. We look like “the people in charge.”
The people who ask us for help are in need of direction. They turn to the nearest thing that looks like an authority.
We did our best to help them, but a real authority could answer all their questions and give them exactly what they need.
During our time in the museum, we keep running into Tom. He continues offering us answers and directions.
If only our spiritual guides would pop up and speak to us so clearly when we need guidance in life.
He is the expert so we listen to him carefully.
By the time we walked through the museum twice, we understood how it was laid out and where everything was located.
There were signs to follow, but we didn’t notice them at first. Tom pointed them out to us and explained what they meant.
We had to look carefully and learn from an expert which path to take.
As we gained experience, we felt more confident and we could develop a plan of what to see and what to record for our YouTube channel and website.
We were less likely to miss out on a valuable exhibit or experience.
But, if we had talked with Tom the moment we entered the museum, we would have saved a lot of time.
We learn from the expert, then we share that knowledge with more people.
That’s how we help others on both our YouTube channels, New Mexico Day Trips and Garage Prospecting.
That’s the purpose behind all the content we create and distribute.
As a content entrepreneur, it’s important to have a strong purpose behind the content you create. A strong purpose not only helps guide your content creation process, but it also helps you stay motivated and connected to your audience.
