We need to know that circumstances may prevent us from taking advantage of opportunities in the future, and that makes it important to act decisively when we can.
Hello and welcome to the Land of Enchantment. I’m Shelley Carney. Today we’re talking about seizing opportunities before they’re gone, especially as it relates to creating content and taking day trips.
Last week, I shared the upside of adding another YouTube channel to our brand.
With New Mexico Day Trips and Garage Prospecting, we can reach a larger audience with two specific niches that have a common theme.
Even better, the channel we brought back is already monetized so we can start earning revenue right away.
But what about the downside?
There is more work to do and we have to schedule a time to do it all and still get our videos done by our deadline. Granted, that deadline is self-imposed. But we feel accountable to our audience to fulfill our commitments for new content each week.
For the last few weeks, we have been ahead of schedule with our day trip videos. But now that we’ve added a second channel and all the extra work that brings with it, we are beginning to lose ground.
It was our intention to do a day trip to Socorro on Friday.
I got a text from my partner Toby early Friday morning.
“Please call when you get up. I can’t go today. I had a sleepless night.”
So I called, and we postponed our Friday trip to Tuesday.
We couldn’t go Monday because of a work conflict and Wednesday is the day our video has to get edited and uploaded so we can do our livestream with it Wednesday night.
Now it’s Monday, the wind is picking up and the forecast for tomorrow is rain and/or snow.
Today’s conversation: “Should we go tomorrow? What do you think?”
“I think we should have gone last Friday.”
Yes, I am aware that is not a helpful answer.
When I was a mom with toddlers at home, I learned not to put off what I could do right now, such as grocery shopping or a playdate, because you never know when the kids will get sick and everything grinds to a halt while you focus on getting them well again.
Now that we’re in our retirement years, it’s not the kids who get sick, it’s us or our partner. Or the weather is bad. Or something goes wrong with the car. Or we have a dentist or doctor’s appointment. Or some other excuse pops up.
But if we keep putting things off because of excuses, pretty soon we don’t go anywhere.
So we have to make deadlines and judgments about what can be put off and what needs to be a priority.
While putting off a day trip can give us more time to plan, it can also lead to added stress, hasty work, forced decisions, and a sense of imbalance and dissatisfaction.
So it’s important to think it through carefully before postponing.
As we all know, life is full of surprises. We never know when circumstances may change and prevent us from doing something we really wanted to do. That’s why it’s important to seize opportunities before they slip away.
This especially holds true for content creators.
Trust us, we’ve been there.
You’ve got your camera gear ready, the truck is packed, and the perfect location in mind, but then it’s pouring rain, snowing, or more likely for us, the wind is whipping up a fierce obstacle to being outdoors.
What do you do? Do you postpone and call it a day, or do you embrace the weather and make the best of it?
Here’s a little secret: the best videos are often the ones that are spontaneous and unplanned. So, take that day trip (as long as it is not dangerous.)
The added weather element can make for a unique and entertaining story for your video.
When we put off a day trip because we’re tired and the weather turns bad, we may regret not taking advantage of the opportunity when we had the chance.
This highlights the importance of balancing our need for rest with our desire to experience new things and make memories.
It also serves as a reminder that we should seize opportunities when they present themselves, as we never know when circumstances may change and prevent us from doing so in the future.
I know there are many things my mom wishes she would have done before she had a stroke and it was easier to get around.
This can serve as a lesson for future decision-making and encourage us to prioritize experiences and make the most of our time.
Don’t let life pass you by without making the most of the opportunities for adventure.
Seize the day, and let the world see what you’re capable of through your content.
Who knows, you may just inspire others to do the same!
Are you tired of scrolling through your social media feeds, filled with videos of your friends’ exciting day trips and adventures? Do you ever find yourself thinking, “I wish I could do that, but I just don’t have the time”?
Well, guess what, my friend – the time is NOW.
You never know when life will throw you a curveball, and opportunities for adventure may no longer be there. So grab your camera, and get out there!
Day trips are a perfect adventure. They don’t require a lot of planning or time off work, and they’re a great way to escape the daily grind and explore new sights and experiences.
Whether you’re into hiking, kayaking, or just taking in the local culture, there’s always something exciting to be found on a day trip.
And don’t forget the added bonus of being able to share your adventures with the world through your YouTube channel, podcast, or blog!
Imagine the satisfaction you’ll feel when you upload a video or post a story with photos of your latest day trip and see the views and comments roll in.
Start making a list of all the day trip destinations you’ve been dreaming of visiting and make a plan to get there.
If you’re feeling extra adventurous, why not challenge yourself to visit a new destination each week?
The possibilities are endless, and the memories you create will last a lifetime.
Don’t let the fear of not having the “perfect” equipment hold you back. Your smartphone or a simple action camera will do just fine.
The most important thing is to get out there and have fun!
Learn more about the camera equipment and methods we use to record our day trips when you visit our YouTube channel, New Mexico Day Trips, and join us live on Wednesday nights.

I have another fun poem for you today. It’s called
Adventure Awaits: Seize the Day and Create Memories
Are you tired of sitting at home,
Staring at your phone, feeling alone?
Do you dream of adventure and fun,
But can’t seem to get up and run?
Well, my friend, it’s time to take charge,
And stop living life like you’re in a barge!
Day trips and adventures are waiting for you,
All you need is a camera and some good shoes.
Don’t let the opportunities slip away,
For they may not be there another day.
Pack up your bags, gather your gear,
And head outside without any fear.
Create content that’s unique and true,
And share your adventures with the world too.
Let your personality shine and take the lead,
Who knows where it might take you, indeed!
So take the leap and seize the day,
The memories you create will never fade away.
Life’s too short to sit and wait,
Go out there and explore, it’s never too late!
“It is only in adventure that some people succeed in knowing themselves — in finding themselves.”
