What did you do in 2022 that needs to change in 2023? What intentions and goals do you have for the coming year? Toby and Shelley share how they gained the clarity necessary to make changes and get more focused in 2023.

What went well and what didn’t?
The things that went well are we published two books, produced four shows a week, built an entry-level and signature course, and created a content consistency framework and schedule that we use and share freely with our audience.
We started a new YouTube channel, New Mexico Day Trips, so we would have a good reason to get out of the house and see all of New Mexico. It is growing, and we have created a workflow and equipment kit that makes it fun and easy to produce every week.
Toby and I had a great discussion about our year and our vision for encore entrepreneurs in 2023 on our Messages and Methods livestream, Recap 2022 and Predictions for 2023 and How to Prepare.
The thing that didn’t go so well in 2022 is spending too much time creating four shows, which means we didn’t focus on succeeding in one specific arena.
It also means we spent more time creating content than doing business.

Hello, 2023!
Let’s set some goals.
It’s important to evaluate our goals and progress every year to replace what is not working.
This weekend, after we wrapped up the final show of the year, Toby and I had a discussion about what we want to achieve in 2023.
We started evaluating what we need to shut down.
Three shows, three podcasts, and two blogs that we are creating do not justify the effort/investment it takes to create them.
These are tough discussions to have because when we create something, we put our love and energy into it. Those shows become an important part of who we are.
We care about them.
We invested hundreds of hours in them.
We sacrificed time with family and friends to make them happen.
These shows are all marginally successful.
“Don’t be afraid to give up the good to go for the great.” John D. Rockefeller
Marginal success is not a great place to be.
If you are failing, you know you have to change everything.
If you are succeeding just a little, there is a temptation to keep on doing it, believing that the big payoff is just around the corner.
But we cannot use our short time here on earth inefficiently and ineffectively.
It is time to stop settling for mediocrity and instead set high goals for ourselves in one specific thing.
What makes these end-of-year discussions much easier is understanding our mission, vision, and skills, along with what makes us happy. We know where we are going, why, and our path to get there.
Having those elements figured out creates guard rails that help us avoid doing things that will not bring us our desired results.
We love creating content, traveling around New Mexico together, recording and editing videos, and growing a YouTube channel and community.
Our travel channel, New Mexico Day Trips, gives us the most satisfaction, and it builds memories that help us feel we have accomplished goals and grown as people.
We have a goal to grow our subscriber base on this channel to 25,000 or more in 2023.
There is also a blog and newspaper column planned for 2023 to support the show and our business website.
Last year, we gathered our viewers and asked them what they wanted us to create that they would like to watch.
They told us they like to watch our travels around New Mexico.
Nobody asked for the other channels we produce.
That makes it a simple choice.
We love it, and our viewers love it.
Last week we traveled to Grants, NM, and visited the New Mexico Mining Museum and the El Malpais Visitor Center. We’ll be sharing our stories and videos about them this week and next.
We enjoyed watching the films they show in both venues.
In one video, there was a special quote that sparked our interest so much that we turned to look at each other in delight and repeated the words “I am who I am because I have been there” together, focusing our intentions for 2023.
“There is a great good in returning to a landscape that has had extraordinary meaning in one’s life. It happens that we return to such places in our minds irresistibly. There are certain villages and towns, mountains and plains that, having seen them walked in them lived in them even for a day, we keep forever in the mind’s eye. They become indispensable to our well-being; they define us, and we say, I am who I am because I have been there, or there.” N. Scott Momaday, “Revisiting Sacred Ground,” in The Man Made of Words
Please visit our favorite YouTube channel, New Mexico Day Trips. Subscribe and share it with family and friends who would enjoy learning more about New Mexico.
