Quote from the livestream
Learn, grow, and have fun. It should be fun. The second half of life is not about “have to,” so much as now I have time and I’m in a place in my life where I “get to.” I get to choose. I get to do the business that I’ve always wanted to do.
An encore entrepreneur to me is a person in the second half of life who is building a home-based business online.
The priorities of the encore entrepreneur include:
In the second half of life, we have finished raising a family and we are more focused on building a community rather than climbing the corporate ladder.
We see the state of the world and decide to make a positive difference by helping others.
We know we can help others with our
Based on what you love to do, you start a business by choosing
We’ve come to a place in our lives where we realize that our time is precious and limited. That’s why we want to be productive and have fun. It’s like multi-tasking; we meet two of our basic needs simultaneously.
Excitement for the work we do becomes a reason to get out of bed and get the day started.
We enjoy the experience of helping others because we’ve discovered that giving to those in need of our help makes us feel good, whether we get paid for our time or volunteer.
It is empowering to set your own hours, and it allows time for self-care and spending time with family and friends.
Running a business gives you the opportunity to express your personality because each brand is as unique as the individual behind it.
When learning is a choice, we can slack off and do something easy instead. But owning a business means there is always something we feel we need to learn more about.
We know that learning and growing are good for us and keep us living a healthy, happy life. But much like being forced to exercise because we have to walk the dog, learning needs motivation. That motivation can come from the necessity of succeeding in business.
Expanding knowledge and skills is vital to keep up with changing tools and trends. If I want to grow my audience online, I need to know what works now and how to take advantage of that. Reading books and articles or taking a course can help me do better in my business.
The adventure of trying new things keeps life fun and interesting and that applies to running a business and trying different marketing campaigns. Acting on the information I’m learning means I’m reaching outside my comfort zone and that adventure can be a thrilling growth experience.
Meeting new people is a challenge, so if we don’t have the motivation to put ourselves out there, we won’t do it. Having a business that requires content marketing means we need to reach out and meet new people. Collaborating with other creative entrepreneurs is a great excuse to make new friends.
We can work traveling into our business and it will push us to get out and see the world more often.
My business partner Toby and I built a YouTube channel, New Mexico Day Trips, so we would have an excuse to travel every week. Then we make videos about our trip and share them with our friends. These trips inspire moments and memories we treasure.
Rio Grande Autumn, Photo by Toby Michael YounisOwning a business and creating content means we become leaders in our industry and community. We can use that leadership to share wisdom and hope to help our friends and followers enjoy life more abundantly.
Anything we’ve done throughout our lives can give us an advantage when we become encore entrepreneurs.
Being a parent means we have people and organizational skills because we had to help our children through school and life.
As a spouse, we also incorporate persuasion and teamwork into our daily lives.
Working for somebody else gives us skills in listening and providing exceptional service, which we need when we have our own clients.
There are three main functions we need to focus on for our entrepreneurial endeavor.
Putting together the pieces of a business requires some organizational skills and planning.
We have decisions to make about our
The entrepreneur is the person in the middle between clients who need a product or service and the time, effort, and materials it takes to provide that service to them.
That means we have to reach out to acquire clients and the things our clients need.
Everything within the outreach piece leads to engaging with a client and selling our product or service to them.
That outreach includes networking with potential referral and collaboration partners to become visible to our ideal clients.
Content marketing can help us expand our efforts in outreach. We can attract an audience through videos, podcasts, blogs, and social media posts. Frequent content production means we reach the required number of touchpoints with prospective customers more quickly.
Promotions for new products or campaigns add excitement for our solutions and names to our email lists.
Email list growth is a priority and we can build a list of engaged readers over time by nurturing the relationship through weekly communication.
Events such as workshops, summits, panel discussions, or challenges can encourage new and long-term audience members to take action.
The third part of an entrepreneurial business is delivery to the customer. We have to set up systems to move seamlessly from the sale to the satisfaction of our client’s needs.
Delivery methods may include:
To begin the customer journey, we start with visibility.
Our ideal clients must know we exist and that we provide the solution they need.
The best way to get your message and method out into the world is through content marketing.
We start with a livestream video to create a long-form piece of content each week. From that livestream, we have the materials for:
Once we have produced enough content on a specific theme, we can publish a book.
Then it is time to promote the book through a book tour, which we can do by guesting on several podcasts and appearing in person at local bookstores or other venues. We can speak on the topic or read from the book to provide infotainment to the audience.
Events and campaigns are an opportunity to showcase our content in new and exciting ways.
We can offer a workshop with a downloadable workbook, or run a challenge with emails and checklists based on past content we have created.
Every entrepreneurial business can benefit from offering a digital product, such as a:
